About HKU MSA

HKU MSA began as an idea to have a Muslim representation in HKU. It’s purpose was to communicate between the university's administration and Muslim students. Needs of students were conveyed to the administration and their help sought in establishing basic facilities like prayer room and halal food canteen. As a newly found society, their guidance was also sought on how to proceed to make MSA a successful proactive society of HKU.

At that time there were only a handful of Muslim students in HKU. They took their inspiration for this society from MSA National, which is an umbrella organization that manages all MSA organizations in North America. Muslim students, after studying constitutions of MSA National and HKU’s established societies, wrote MSA HKU’s very own constitution which defines the purpose of this society and provides guidelines on its functioning.

The next milestone aimed by MSA HKU was to register with the university and thereby become an official society of HKU. For some time after writing the constitution, MSA HKU did not have enough members to file an application for recognition as an official society. However in 2011, there were enough members in MSA to apply. The application still lies with HKU Students’ Union and is in process. There have been many hurdles due to which this process has still not been completed.

Along the way MSA HKU has grown into a bigger and better society of HKU, always serving the community of HKU regardless of its status as an official society.
