The year 2011-12 saw a total of 5 different activities being carried out by the MSA. The most important activity carried out by the MSA was the organization of the Friday Prayers. Muslims have to pray every Friday afternoon in congregation and the MSA used to organize the prayers by requesting an Imam (priest) from the Islamic Trustees of Hong Kong and setting a convenient time for everyone to come. Since last year, the prayer room has become inadequate to hold our numbers so we have been booking larger rooms for the Friday Prayer. This year the numbers increased even further hence leading to us organizing two Friday Prayers at different times. The second Friday Prayer was led by student thereby providing our members with the opportunity to further their self-development. This activity has been continuing regularly every Friday since the beginning of the semester.
In October/November we held two major events side by side; the lecture series and the Eid party. There were two lectures held, one in English and one in Cantonese. Prior to these lectures the MSA also put up booths to publicise the lectures. Free books were also distributed at the booths. The speakers were invited from outside HKU; for the English lecture, it was Wael Ibrahim of the Serving Islam Team HK and for the Cantonese one it was an Imam from the Wanchai mosque.
In the same week, the MSA also held its Eid party. Eid is a Muslim festival. There are two Eids in a year. For the Eid event, Global Lounge was booked by the MSA. Our event was sponsored by the Office of International Student Exchange at Global Lounge. Due to their generous contribution, a lunch was held which was attended by over 100 students (both members and non-members).
The year then saw the MSA Footie (5 vs 5 Football) being organized. This was an event which aimed at providing the members and interested non-members with an opportunity to meet and interact with their fellow colleagues in a lively environment. A total of 8 teams participated and each team consisted of 5-7 players. The tournament lasted a week and the venue was Flora Ho Sports Centre.
February 2013 saw some more events by the society. MSA took part in the World Religion Day by sending a speaker to present the Islamic view on the topic at hand. This event was held at HKU and was organized by Dr. David Palmer from the Faculty of Arts. It was attended by people from various backgrounds. In the same month the MSA also helped Dr. David Palmer with his Common Core field trip. The MSA held interactive sessions to introduce some basic concepts of Islam to the students. There were three sessions held. While this EXCO only took care of the first one, the next EXCO carried out the remaining two.
End of February 2013 saw the Annual Elections take place. A new EXCO was elected and the voter turnout was quite good too. From March 2013 the new EXCO took office.
